County forest development plats, 1914-1946.

Series 2 of record group 70-129 consists of county forest development plats (1914-46) from the Forestry Division of the Michigan Dept. of Conservation. Contains township maps of selected Michigan counties that apprear to have been prepared in 1918, with the possible exception of seven plats which may have been drawn as early as 1914. These maps, originally created by Marcus Schaaf, the state forester, often show such cultural and physical characteristics of townships as settlements, roads, railroads, swamps, lakes and rivers. Land owned by Michigan is shaded in yellow, with notes of how the property came into the hands of the state. Occasional marginal notes describe the nature of vegetation cover, and the percent of land in each township that was state, federal or privately owned. The plats were occasionally updated through 1946.
